Most of the people have played snake games for the first time on Nokia mobiles. During that time, the game was one of the attractions for what some people actually bought the mobiles. It’s classic and has become a favorite game for every age. However, since the game changed a lot and adapted in different versions, people still remember playing the snake game on a two-inch screen.
The game is older than the Nokia
Well for some people, Nokia might be the first who introduced the game. But The snake game is far older than that. The Nokia version is inspired by an arcade game called Blockade. The snake type game was created by Gremlin and launched in 1976 for the first time. The blockade was for two players where players were required to navigate the snakes without letting them touch each other.
The snakes leave the solid line behind which turns as a blockade for another player. The one who stays for longer wins the game. But Gremlin interactive, the British company and the creator of the blockade was shut down in 1984.
Nokia introduced Snake game
In the year 1997, Nokia came with the game again and introduced it with the Nokia 6110. This was the beginning of the game, however Snake classic is different from Blockade and it was made for playing alone as well. In 1997, Nokia launched another model called Nokia 3310 and it was the best selling mobile at that time. With the new model, Snake 2 was added too with bonuses, variations in fields, and cyclical. Also, the maze was added to keep the game challenging.
Snake game evolving and growing popularity
At this time, the arcade game was popular in most of the households. Also, the game became a vital part of mobile gaming history. Not just the game was interesting but it was suitable for all ages and addictive at the same time. With a snake, Nokia evolved the game as time changed. And that’s how they came with Snake Xenzia which was quite the same as snake 2 but it was suitable for the monochrome displays. Snake Ex was the first game where the graphics improved keeping all the features from snake 2. The game had the top-down view, and the player could see the snake eating the bugs and navigation.
The downfall and the end of Nokia Snake game
Until snake ex, Nokia successfully held the attention of people. But they decided to go with another idea- the Gage platform. The company included the game for the N-Gage platform as well. And that’s the point where the downfall starts to begin. The game was in 3D which gave the third view experience of the snake. The player could follow the snake and watch when he ate bugs. With the psychedelic world, the snake game was quite interesting. But for lots of players, the game was a huge letdown.
To overcome this, Nokia launched another game called Snake subsonic which turned out to be another failed attempt. In the year 2008, HTC dream the first android smartphone, and the budding android ecosystem took the snake game classic from Nokia. And later on, they did a collaboration with Microsoft to make games for window phones.
